Greefings! a

Well, here's another issue of this wild zine of mine. Since
last issue, I've done various things such as get more
involved with STAND, our anti-airport group. | put out
anotherissue of the Anti-Airport Alert (#5) and organized a
caravan o Springfield, where we picketed the Govemor's
Mansion. Stanton & | also confronted him in his office. I've
been doing a LOT of prisoner support, mainly helping writers
and organizers get fheir message out. | attended the zine
conference in Bowling Green and did a workshop on
prisoner zines then. | was invited fo festify at the Juneteenth
fally put on by the Coaiition to Profect Public Housing. OF
course, | also went off on several people for different
reasons. Most bewildering of all, I've mellowed some and
decided fo appreciate and enjoy the wonderful things that
I have - my wite, my children and my life. Cheers to youl

STEPHEN DOES STUFF

Stephen says he can do everything except
cross the street by himself and drive a car. He
knows “just about everything! Stephen is four.
But, he’s almost five and I believe him.

When we'’re verbally sparring, I‘ll give him
a gentle challenge. Immediately, he puts up his
little finger and assuredly says, “no, It’s like
this, Dad.” - on whatever subject. He's my
little helper. He likes to help with the yard
work and the cooking. He’s right there for me,
messing around in the garage. He suggests we
listen to music and tells me what to put on -
“Don’t Let ‘Em Do It,” which is a song I wrote
about the airport. A little later, he’ll chime
in from the backseat of our car, “turn it up!”
Then, he smiles when I do.

Then maybe, he’ll decide to play a little
video game. We get the instructional type
disks, not the “get used to killing, planes and
bombs” junk. He’ll sing along with the little
jingle.” He's an absolute sheer delight and
continuous, everyday joy.

Then he might get funky. He’ll sit on your
chair and refuse to budge. “Nuh-uh!” Forget
it. Kid’'s decide. Too bad for you, dad.

He just learned to ride his two-wheeler. I
just took the 2nd training wheel off a few days
ago. His buddy zack taught him how on his
(smaller) bike. Stephen’s fearless and mighty
proud of himself. He was 50-0-0-o anxious to
show us. He ditched his bike a few times and
scuffed up his knees a little bit. So, we
fished out some of Stanton’s old pads.

He throws too, and hits and catches. He's
finishing up his T-ball season. Every kid on

both teams makes safe and scores every time up

every game. The last one up every half inning
hits a homerun!

Stephen swims, too. He’s taking lessons,
now. You should see his kick. You can
visualize what type of teenager, young man and
older adult he will become. He’s got an
athletic body, with long, strong legs, a

beautiful face and he just explodes with energy,
enthusiasm and exuberance. He’s gonna be a
unique humanitarian Adonis - just like his
brother, Stanton. Both lads are strikingly
handsome and draw spontaneous words of praise
from strangers. During their check-ups, the
lady doctor takes time to stand back and just
admire these marvelous children. “They’re
perfect! You've done a fantastic job!”
“Thankyou,” Leslie says. “We think they’re
pretty great, too! - aren’t-cha?” Then she
beams and touches them lovingly.

The glow is from their strongly, patiently
and actively connected synapses and axions.
They' re thinkers bathed in the invigorating cool
springs of daily love and the meticulous
attention towards life-affirming instruction.
Leslie is incredible at this. She provides the
unconditional deep pool, every child needs and
deserves. I'm the one who offers new approaches
to their thinking (not that she doesn’t) and the
joys of horsing around and fooling around.

Stanton, perhaps, offers the most in
teaching Stephen about everything. Can you
imagine being a ten year old boy who must mentor
an ultra rambunctious, fiesty, determined (and
tough) four year old brother, who thinks nothing
of playing with all your toys and assuming all
your cool Stuff is his to mess with? He’'s being
constantly interrupted while designing computer

programs, or effortlessly creating interesting
artwork, either on paper or in 3-D. Stanton may
be writing into notebooks or reading to us or
something. Here comes little Stephen with a
bushel basket full of questions, entreaties and
demands! Stanton’s got the patience of a saint,
becuz he’s also gotta keep me on the up-and-up.
I know it all emanates from the power of the
boundless love of their constantly anticipating
and thinking mother.

They really like it when I'm around. It's
a treat for them when I haven’t disappeared
before they awaken and ditch them for work.
But, they crave and pine for their mom when
she’s away. She feels the same about them.
When she returns, they jump for joy and rush to
her embrace.

The boys like me - a lot. They love me!
We tussle and have fun. We do stuff, go places,
think, work, talk, joke around and play. I am a
most fortunate man. But they absolutely adore
and worship their mother. This is as it should
be. The essence of life is the love between
mother and child.

There's a square mile of woody on the northeast
corner of the “footprint.” It'y known ayRaccoon
Grove: A very nice forest preserve with, beauttful
and peaceful walking pathy encompasses most of
tucked withir it; with plenty of space for privacy.

We bought a Little dolhowse in these woody ine
Juneof 1990. Stanton way not quite two:*

I way struck by the quality of the air -
oxygenated and fresh. Also; I noticedthe clarity of
sound: Birdy sang very cleanly. Yowcowld feel
their rejoicing: Andthe soill My, what marvelows

Most of all, it wasw't ruined: Many treey and,
bushey were Living and dying: Dead wood way
Wing all around. The soil was soft and lumpy. A
gopher was bugy tunnelling all-over theplace: Ands
the wildflowers! Just gorgeous!! They blanketed,
everything: Severaltypey in blue; white, yellow,
violet, pink: Very delicate. They wayedsto-the
gentlest of breeges:

Squirrely; too-- everywhere. Rabbity, raccoons;
oppossums; deer, snakes; ever frogy and toady (we
have acreek?) Wehavea neighbor next door who-
had o for complete with kity somewhere back there:

menaced by some very ornery waspy. Those suckery
would, come shooting out of ahole in the grounds
like o mini attack squadron. They didn't like uy
and we didn'y likethemd Stanton got stung twice;
oneday. Hescreamed bloody murder. The
yellowjackety were the sige of small mice; but they
Qidn't care to-pick afight: They were lovery (of
nectar*)

To-feel our way around; Stanton and I would
gobiking: He/d be inthe bunny seat inback: Weld
meet and greet all, the new people: It was nice
because there wasn't that many people or cary. It
way quiet; s0-you could hear ‘e comin’, too: My
poor wife got stuck evaluating the condition of the
howse we'd bought: AWl systems were pretty muchs
no~go: Wehad to-redo-everything, practically.
Thiy took a Lot of time;, money and.effort: I did
helluvalot of work; so-don't worry.

Aryway, Stantow & I happdy pedalleds
throughout our surroundings: Thiyway 1990 - the
year of the-cicada: We met Nellie Nelson: Sheway
anold lady that lived down the way. She tolds uy of
thetime before last - in 1956 - when the cicaday
wereankle deep inRaccoon Grove. Yucki A couple
we'had gotten the chance to- meet her and learn
about Monee: Sheway sorelaxed and earthy. A
very friendly lady.

Ay for the cicaday; they're an unusual
phenomenon: Yowhear thenvall the time actually,
Uike orickety. But these cicaday only come out every
seventeervyeary, yet only live afew monthy. We
werelucky. They weren’y that bad in Raccoon,
Grove, that year. They sort of migrate each time to- 1
other woody nearby. Crete really got whacked, by
‘em; i '90. They were concentrated, maybe fve to-
twenty miles away from us.

. WRatamess! These creatures are benign; but
creepy. They fly around haphagardly with their
flimsy wings and fat, squishy bodies: TheyWfly
right into-youd I wayplayin’ tenniy one time and
oneof them splatted on my foreheadi Some people
collect them;, throw them in v skillet and sautee
them: How groatie! So-anyway, cicadas See yow
guyy w2007 (if thell.S. hasn't incinerated
everything by then; yet.)

So; we're pedalling around... A lot of bicycle
Auby and individualy frequent thiy area because
@y s0-serene and pretty. Especially, thiytime of
year, June. Allthefoliage iy in full flower. The
cropy are bursting through the soil, almost:
noticeably. Much of the footprint remaing fallow,
year after year. It makeyfor a-prairie effect ands
really addy o natwralnesy and diversity to-the,
area: It'y spread out and almost unplatted; The
creaturey have plenty of cover to-slink around and
flit about amidst.

Egyptian Tradiy o famowy roads It slithery
through Monee and down south - all the way to-
Cairo; IWinoiy (“LittleEgypt:") Last century, it way
an importunt connection to-trade foods and other
goody. Oneday, Stantowé& I rode down ayfar asT
felt comfortuble doing: After only about a mile; it
turny frompavement to-just stones: Now, it'yjust
farmy and fieldy - no-neighborhoody or any of that:
It really gety quiet and nice: Yowdow't have any
intrusive metal infrastructure, either. Maybe an
old string of telephone poles with & lone wire: Yow
can seefor miley, toor Big ranmbling fields; lo
meadowy, extragreen pathy meandering about
(creeks) and woods; surrounding the occassional
farm howses, siloy and barn - olds ashelll It was o
very relaring; if exhausting Little trip. We saw avlot
of butterflies.

Yearylater, after Stephew came (he way born in
1994,) we three would go-out into-the heart of the:
footprint. We'd go-south on Egyptian Trad to-
Offner. Thenwe'd go-east maybe three miley;
mostly along stone farmv roads. Then; we'd go-
south again to-Eagle Lake Road: Thiy stretchs iy
rather primitive: It'just adirt roads which cuty
through the corn fields: Only tractory wse it - no-
cary. If it way wet or rutty, we'd have to-walk owr
bikes, but only for maybea mdle: Then we went
back west to-our tree: Thiy tree way the biggest and
oldest tree inthe footprint. It way o,
oak acros from afarm: We'd stop and tuke a
break and enjoy our snacks. We'd bring candy,
G, juice borey and water. Thew we'd complete
theloop by continuing west back to-Egyptian Trad,
then go-north back-home: It was alwayy o special
treat whew Leslie would join ugin owr Little
excursions, either on bike or onfoot:*

Onasad note; our tree iy gonel Recently, I
don’t know why or by whom, but it was cut down
and removed: It seemed quitehealthy to-me: I
think it iy sickeningly suspiciouss

We would usually see at least one deer,
Pheasanty; other large birdy and other animaly
during these ridey. Big groupyof deer often ran
together. One time we must have seer twenty-five
of themall together.
People have spotted coyote and all sorty of n
things. Packyof wild dogs run together out thiy
way, tool I've seen'emi Some people have several
horses;, too: We see themv graging and prancing
about; almost every day.

Another sweet thing iy av sign down there;
somewhere: It iy apicture of ahot air balloon Ity
aballoow crossing sign: Balloonisty float around
beauty and lack of power lines; etc. Those
flying machiney ride ir (what are those thingy
called? Yowknow with the little parachutes? - Oh,
yeah! parasaisl) They do-those around here, too:

There’y v small airport out here, too: It'y called
Sanger. I thinkthat'sthe guy'ylast name;
Sometimes we go-out there and ride our bikey
around in circley and look at the few small- planesy
parked there: It'yjust afourm with a little runway.

Some dear friends, George and Maureen, live
right v the middle of the footprint. O ten acres,
mostly evergreeny. It'y not atreefarm: They just
wanted to-have a zilliov treey arounds Inthe back:
wasweat lodge: It'ybig: They say forty people can
fit inthere:. Native Americany from around the
country come here and do-all night sweaty. Ity
somethingd

George hand, built o meditution chapel nearby,
too: It'yvery impressive: It iy made fromv selected
hardwood floor with a unique design in the
middle of the floor, made of tiny, coloved tiles, all
placed individually. Iy some important Sanskrit 2

symbolor jomething. Actually, it iy called &
mandala: It hay o special meaning, but I'm not
surewhat it meany. The dictionary I openeds
doesw't have it Listed; but aMandan iy a member of
wtribe of Sioww Indiany wholived, in the Migsowr

They have a-big meeting room; too: We hold our
STAND meetings here: We formed our group STAND
(Shut Thiy Auport Nightinare Down) inthe spring:
of '98. It grew out of anearlier group of local
citigeny called RURAL (Residenty United, to-Retmin
Agricultural land) Other groupshold meetings
and do-programyhere, too: I heards
classes take place here; yogay all sorty of holistic
tpestuff. Back to-the Earthv related typey of things!

I Like to-gothrough the footprint on my way
howme fromwork: There'y no stoplighty or hardly
any other cary. Ity so-nice driving down say,
Highland Avenue: It goes through rolling hilly
with @ beautiful view of the farm fields andsa
stream: Thew it endy at Pauling Road which tukes
me right to-our howse: After stressing out all day,
iy instant relief to-enter the footprint...

Sometimey onmy day off, my homey and I go-
golfing: Hecomeyover early inthe morning and
we-hop inmy car ands take off. Yowknow, when
Yyowknow you're going to-go-play golf the next
morning; yowcanhardly sleep, you're so-anxiows
and excited: It'ylike alittle kid on Christmas Eve:

Anyway, what'y the first thing we do? Why, we
cruise throughv the footprint! All the sweet courses
invthe booniey we like to-frequent are best arriveds
atfrom out of the footprint: What w nice way to-
start! Welaugh and joke and tall and say how
sweet the day looks:

The footprint is great for walks, too- - especially
early inthe morning or near surset: Yow really
feel alive invthe early morning air, ay the fog Ufty
and the life stirs. The sky iy so-huge; too! Yow can
seeeverything: Sunsety are exquisite: Every color of
the rainbow iy right there for all to-see! Youwget
every last glimpse; too: No-obstruction will cheat
yowout of that last; wistful look: Andsthen? Why
the stary come out, of cowrsel Onaclear night,
your eyey feel Like telescopes. So-brilliant and clear
arethe stury. We wsed to-go-out there to-look for
comety. Shooting stary, too:

Andthe storms! Yikes! Especially, huge ones:
Yow caw see them rumbling their way in from tens,
maybe hundredy of miley away. The lightning can
befrightening: It electrifies the whole sky and then
yowhear the grumbling of thunder. Iy simply
spectucular! Everjust watching the cloudy drift by
o fun if yow tuke the time to-kick back and gage
up for avwhile:

Farm Fresh or Poisoned “Life2"

Early in the moming, the air is swee! and fragrant. Il's going fo be
a glorious spring day. Wild flowers perched alop their deficale
stems, are swaying in Ihe genlle breeze. A bunny stops - then
scampers along her way. A mellow symphony of birds' songs
eniivens the quiet air. Overhead, a squirrel foys wilh gravity upon o
small branch.

I1's five a.m. The alomn fings. He drags himself ou of bed affer
fitil sleep, awakened on and off by the ebb and, o of decibel
levels. They range from the “acceptable” drone of the bittery
‘monolonous dull roar, 1o annoying. fo the child-tertifying, stop-
everything-you're-doing, cover-your-ears-and-giimace hellation of
direct overhead fight. The whole sky echoes in anguish from the
angry infruder.

Daddy's off today. The children are excited, anxious and happy.
Mom gets fo sleep in for a change. Fresh air circuiates throughout
the house from open windows, genlly fluttering the sheer curlains.
Dod has made himself a cup of coiiee and plopped himselfin the
'hammock. reading of the latest triumphs of M.J.. Pip and Denns, He
‘whistles in reply fo fhe clear joyous songs of the birds. A screen door
bangs. He sees his chidren run foward him. He moves fo profect his
coffee. "Hi, DadI" “Hi Sonl", They jump on him. They laugh, falk.
fickle and sway, making plans for their day.

He walks over fo the window and pulls back the heavy dark
curlain and crinkles the shade to peek "outdoors.” I's a yellowy
haze, lie always. The triple-paned windows are permanently
sealed. The screens have all been removed. The outside pane is
cloudily efched by the mini meteor shower created by el exhaust.
It's an air-conditioned fife. The walls are expensively bolstered with
soundproofing. It's a fomb-ike existence. But they are “affiuent.”
Thanks fo the irport, they have il the modem conveniences. The
coffee is making itself. The radio clicks on. He must get the fraffic
report. “Progress" brings s dally gridlock. Looking around his home,
e has everything - including a complete home enterainment
center, where the family spends the bulk of their waking hours, while
athome. A huge felevision set is always on. Funny, they boast an
eloborate music system, but they very rarely use it. Televisions and
telephanes appear in several areas, upstairs and in the basement.
High ceilings, fancy camefing, ook cabinetry, rails and trim,
coordinate the decor. A chandelier and fireplace (gas, of course]
accentuate the spacious iving room. Three bathrooms, two full
baths and four bedrooms, furlher increase market vaiue.

Mother orders iheir weekly food, using the computer, s called
“Peopod.” They don't even wanl fo get into one of fheir fhree cars
o diive 1o the nearest grocery store. Tralffic is always so busy and
they're so under seige by the aerial assault ihat is O'Hare,

When Dad's not walching T.V. he's in his den, working.
higher pay comes company work that never ends. These projects
preoccupy and dominate his fhinking - even in his drearms...

There's no yord, just a postage stamp of green in front.
Chemlawn does a helluva job. There's never even one dandelion
or any weed. It'sike a carpel. II's never footworn, eifher. With an
attached garage and a mailslot by the front door, there's never
need o tread onit. The paperboy hifs the porch, Usually, and the
kids use the walkways. He's very proud of his immaculae house. He
gelsin his Lexus and eases out of his driveway. Work s already
weighing on his mind. He shoves a fape in his fape player. Instead
of music, however, itis his boss ratling off instructions of people fo
call and what fo say fo Ihem. He speed dials his subordinates and
relays insiructions on their voice mail. II's another day in the raf race.
for our friend and he loathes his fife. Although he's “made” if and
receives a hefly salary, he s forever worried as he slowly sinks deeper
ond deeperinto debl. His days are stress-filed affairs and his nights
are unfuliling. Sadiy. he and his wife live in marital dicordancy,
under a nighlly olcoholic haze.

Daddy! Let's play hide and seeki” “We should have breakfast firs
“Aw..just for allflle while3" "OX. Three games. We'll each be if*

Stephen’s not quite four. | know where he is, bacause he hides at
the same place every fime, behind the shed, unless I'm not ‘it then

he follows me. Stanton s a wily sort. Almost fen, he can run, think
and hide very well indeed!

Greetings, from the autonomous zone of
Peotone, where the state is trying to do to
us, what the city is already doing to you -
destroy our farms and homes for an airport,
and force us to relocate. We’ve come to
extend our solidarity to you - the poor
People of color being menaced by the city
of Chicago.

Our plight is not as perilous as
yours. Our dwellings are not being
dynamited - at least not yet. But, the
same principle is involved here. The
authoritiés, doing the bidding of the rich
and powerful, are trampling over the rights
of all decent citizens. A commitment to
resistance is our moral obligation!

In this very racist society, black
people are made to pay the most - in every
respect. But, an injury to one is an
injury to all, and this outrage cannot be
tolerated! We must help eachother and rely

Trusting the largesse of the government is
a grave mistake!

In the Reaganite 80’s, the solution to
the housing “problem” was homelessness.

Low income housing was eliminated and
people were thrown into the streets. The
solution in the Clinton 90’s, has been
prison! Almost two million people in this
country are now incarcerated and their
numbers are growing astronomically! Young,
black men especially, are being herded into
the U.S. gulag system and forced to work as
slave laborers, for private companies.
This massive assault is directed at ALL of 24
us!

The real crimes of poverty, racism and
hopelessness go unpunished because they are
intrinsic to the system! If you're a rich,
white male - anything goes! If you're
young, black and poor - everything is
TLLEGAL! !

We have to work together to stop this
juggernaut of greed and exploitation. New
voices are emerging to instruct those of us
who are willing to fight for secial
justice. Many of these voices are muffled
because these courageous people are behind
bars. I’'m talking about people like Ali
Khalid Abdullah, Khalfani X. Khaldun, Karen
Hoffman, Harold Thompson, Christopher

need to help our brothers and sisters who
are locked down, shackled and abused, in

8y way of introduction, my name s Richard M. Flood. | am a state
prisoner curtently incarcerated at the Tamms Correctional Center,
whichis llinois' new “Supermax" facil

Tamms, which opened for “business" in February of 1998, was
initially luded virtually non-stop by llinois legisiators, the li. Dept. of
Cor. (1D.0.C.) spin doctors and fhe media, as the “last stop" and
punishment for the “worst of the worst,” blah, blah, blah.

On the other hand, the hard facts are fhat “Tomms* is @ $90
million, 500 bed faciity, which employs a fulliime stalf, yet sits less
than hal-full oday, a year after f's opening. *Tomms™ is cumently”
housing many non-violent, short-time, mentally impaired, and even
profective custody inmates, while operating under the guise of
public safety and justice. The majority of these inmates were
“kidnapped" from general population in the middle of the night
from various maximum, medium and minimum security faciities and
brought here (for no legifimate reason) and placed under
Administrative Defention Status.

For those of s here, the condilions of confinement are
dehumanizing, degenerative and psychologically toxic, to say the
least. Cerlainly, our individual horror stories are similar fo those from
other "Supermax” faciliies from around the country.

For most of us, the obvious question is "why are we here?”
Although the majority of us may not have been imprisoned for
“polifical * reasons, circumstance has thrown us ino the poiitical
arena. The political mofivation behind the actions of the 1.0.0.C.,
state legisiators and media have effeciively “Hransformed” each
and every man doing fime here at “Tamms" into a political prisoner,
and as such, we are seeking strong support from the outside and
look fo form a grassroots coalifion that wil give @ voice 1o our issues.
To bring you up 10 speed, we must go back 10 1996...

On January 12, 1996, an inmate named Florencio Pecina was shol
(in the back) and killed by o catwalk officer af fhe Pontiac Corr,
Center (one off the four max joints in llinols, along with Jofief,
Statesville and Menard) It has been established from eye-witness
tesfimony that this was of least @ “bad shoot” and quite possibly
criminal act, as inmate Pecina was alone, unarmed and merely
walking down a gallery when he was shot and killed. Pontiac was
immediately locked down and later re-classified os a fofal
segregation facilty. never fo re-open again. This allegedly because
1.0.0.C. claimed that Pecina was an influential member of an
organization which would seek retaliation. Within months of the
Ponfiac incident, the other three max facilfies followed suit and
were locked down for 11/2 years, (during which fime inmates were
stipped of everything that the Supreme Court and the riofs of the
70's provided, when the state would not.)

It was also during this time that a Chicago reporter named Bill fo
Kurlis mysteriously came forward with fhe 5 year old, now infamous
“Richard Speck” fapes, which showed convicted mass murderer
speck apparently using drugs and engoging in homosexual
activities while locked up at Stalevile. Needess o say, fhe 1D.0.C.
had @ bad day and Director Odie Washington was taking hits from
all sides as an old political monster was re-bom. Within days, 1.0.0.C.
spin doclors were on every stalion rying fo clean up the mess, while
ol the same time mid-level correctional officers were smuggling
prison surveillance tapes (showing inmate banquels) to Oprah
Winfrey and complaining that Director Washington had fo go
because the inmates ran all the joints. llinos stote legisiators
paraded in front of the cameras mightily sounding off that heads

must roll ot the 1.D.O.C.. but in the end it was business as usual.

The fiming of these incidents was suspicious indeed, along with
the fact hal no one lost heir job or was even reassigned. When
1.0.0.C. unveiled ifs solufion (“Tomms") it should have become
crystal clear o any reasonable person that this entire ordeal was @
poiifical masquerade, with a $90 million bill for llinos taxpayers.
Once again though. the public was hoodwinked by these shysters
and we must bear he brunt of the blow.

As political prisoners, our focusis on he emerging movement
against prisons and other social movements which fight for political,
economic and social justice.

~As "Supermax” prisoners, our focus is on relief from the
dehumanizing, degeneraive and psychologically foxic conditions
of confinement, here at “Tomms.”

At this date, we have no known voice in llinois and the
communication between inmates here is virtually impossible due fo
the structure of the facility. We need to establish a diclog amongst
ourselves and also on a national level fo establish our positions on
variot ues. We need strong outside support and request any and

structure of the human family. Thesé nsttutions, hrough their acceptance of
our youth, take on the character of a surrogate family. To blame our youth for
criminal behavior, <. violence, would be a misrepresentation of the truth.

Black/Latino communities breeds resistance, and resistance accompanies many
forms of social violence. | myself am a product of these experiences and i can say
with an unburdened heart that most street groups were not created 1o harm
peopleor o vilaw anyone’ ights o pravacy. They sl evlved fom a
grassroots level to protect and secure out communities. A breakdown of the
Siructures and lapse of eal principled Boverning bodies has led to this current

g room. She pulls and she pushes. She yanks and she hits and
she kicks the bars unil she falls on the floor, a heap of exhaustion.
1'go over and pick her up. I hold and rock and kiss her. There is
a look of resignation on her face that i can't stand. We spend the
rest of the visit talking and playing quietly on the floor. When the
guard says the visit is over, i cling to her for dear lfe. She holds
her head high, and her back straight as she walks out of the prison.
She waves good-bye to me, her face clouded and worried, looking

like a little adult. 1 go back to my cage and ery untl i vomit. |
decide that it is time to leave.

ASSATA SHAKUR

In 1972 and early 1973, the FBI orchestrated a media cam-
paign o brand Black Liberation Army member JoAnne Ches-
imard (Assata Shakur) as a bank robber, kidnapper, and cop
killer, On the night of May 2, 1973, New Jersey State Trooper
James Harper spotted Asiata Shakur, Zayd Malik Shakur
Jobn Costan), and Sundiata Acoli (Clark Squire) driving on
the New Jersey State Turnpilke, stopped their car on the pretext
of a fauliy taillight, and burriedly called in veinforcements. In
an ensuing shootont, Zayd Shakur and one trooper were
killed, and Harper and Shakur were wounded.

Despite ber serious wound, Shakur was kept in conditions
that attorney Lennox Hinds described as “barbarous™ while
she was prosecuted for the six crimes she had.allegedly com-
mitted 0 get on the FBI's Most Wanted list. Three separate
cases were eventually dismissed for lack of evidence: an armed
robbery of the New York Hilton hotel, the murder of a drug
dealer, and an attempted murder of a New York policeman.
In three separate trials between 1973 and. 1976, she was ac-
quitted of a bank robbery in Queens, a bank robbery in the
‘Brons, and the kidnapping of a New York drug dealer. The
only remaining charges came from the May 1973 shootout.

‘Because she had become pregnant by her codefendant in
the Bronx bank robbery trial, her New Jersey rial was post-
poned until afier the birth of her daughter. Despite consider-
‘able medical and forensic evidence that, contrary to the police
‘account, she could mot bave fired any weapon and that she
was shot while her hands were raised in surrender, Shakur
was convicted in 1977 by an all-white jury of premeditated
murder and attempted murder of the New Jersey troopers, as
well as all other charges, and she was sentenced to lfe im-
prisonment plus a minimum of twenty-six additional years.

Shuttled from prison to prison, she was shipped in February
1979 from the federal maximum security unit in Alderson,
West Virginia, to the Clinton Correctional Institution for
Women in New Jersey. The following November, three black
men and a white woman rescued ber from Clinton in s daring
armed foray. For years thereafier, federal and state police con-
ducted numerous raids on predominantly African-American
bomes and bousing projects, sometimes sealing_off whole
neighborhoods,in their bunt for the fugitive. In 1984, Shakur
managed 1o flee to Cuba, which promptly granted her political
asylum.

In 1987, Shakur publicly announced her presence, along
with that of her thirteen-year-old daugbter, in Cuba and gave
bher own account of her lfe in Assats: An Autobiography.

important factor (the right to have arms.) A gun is a tool not an
instrument for social revolution; all you get from a revolution by
‘weapons is o political revolution - reod power by an elite group.
Dispensing weapons among the ciizens does not furlher the
development of sociely: does not create belter social possibiities -
the weapons just fallinto the hands of strong, aggressive people
